So you WOULD like to extend your home ?

Well, depending on the type of house you live in, you have a number of options.

Whether it's a detached, semi or terraced house, (or perhaps a flat), any extension or structural alterations requires permission of some sort from your Local Council.

The very least you will require is Building Regulation Permission. This document is proof that what you intend to build conforms in specification to the Building Regulations of England & Wales. (Basically that your extension is going to be well constructed to retain heat and not let in any weather.)

If your extension is greater than 70 cubic metres in volume, (including external walls), and is higher than 4 metres. Then it will probably need Planning permission as well.

Planning permission is dealt with on aesthetic grounds, i.e. how will it look, will it effect the neighbours, etc. and obtaining it can be a minefield if you are not aware of the Local as well as National Planning Bye Laws. Apart from the above 'Cubic Content Rule' there are a various other reasons that Planning Permission may be required.
